Keywords:
Moquegua, Earthquakes, Dominicans, Vineyards, CabildoAbstract
This continuation of the chronicle of Moquegua details the ecclesiastical, civil, and natural disaster history of the city between the 17th and 19th centuries. Certifications of Latin and grammar teaching by the Dominicans in 1684 and disputes over religious foundations such as the Franciscan hospice and the Jesuit college are documented. The author records a series of devastating earthquakes, especially those of 1604, 1715, 1782, and 1833, which ruined churches and dwellings, which force into constant reconstructions such as the Main Church and Santo Domingo. Political conflicts between the Cabildo and the Corregidores are narrated, as well as the public devotion manifestations during festivals such as Corpus Christi and the Immaculate Conception. Finally, the antiquity of the vineyards (since 1587) and disputes over the payment of first fruits are addressed; in addition he mentions the existence of an irrigation canal built by an Inca, and the presence of descendants of Inca royalty in the area.
