The Corregimiento of Saña and the historical problem of the foundation of Trujillo [III]

Abstract

In this continuation, the author details the distribution of encomiendas in the valleys of Trujillo and Saña carried out by Francisco Pizarro, listing notable beneficiaries such as Diego de Mora and Juan de Sandoval. The history of the Corregimiento of Saña (founded as Villa de Santiago de Miraflores in 1563), its agricultural prosperity, and its tragic fate are examined. The article narrates the sacking of Saña by the pirate Edward Davis in 1686, which marked the beginning of its decline. This essay culminates with the transcription of the notarial minute/record of the flood of March 15th, 1720. This natural disaster, described as a divine punishment, destroyed the city in a few hours, leaving only the churches standing and forcing definitely the abandonment of the town by its inhabitants. Testimonies regarding the Roldán family and their role in the conquest alongside Almagro are also included.
