Abstract

An unpublished account by the Dominican friar Gabriel de Oviedo regarding the capture and execution of Tupac Amaru I in 1572 is published. The document provides a written account of  Viceroy Francisco de Toledo's attempt to peacefully remove the Inca from Vilcabamba, the assassination of the Spanish emissaries (including the nobleman Tilano de Anaya) by the Inca's captains, and the subsequent military expedition. It describes the summary trial in Cuzco, the catechizing work of the friars who achieved Tupac Amaru's conversion before he was beheaded, and the deep sorrow among the indigenous crowd that wept at his death.
