Abstract

This is a biographical and bibliographical study of the illustrious Peruvian Franciscan Luis Jerónimo de Oré (c. 1554-1630). The author details his birth in Huamanga, son of the encomendero Antonio de Oré, who financed the Santa Clara convent with the revenue of a silver mine. His ecclesiastical career, his missionary work as a preacher in indigenous languages (Quechua, Aymara, Puquina), and his trips to Rome and Spain are described. His main works are analyzed, especially the Symbolo Catholico Indiano (1598) and the Rituale (1607), highlighting their linguistic and historical value. Finally, his tenure as Bishop of La Imperial (Concepción, Chile), his pastoral visits, and his death are recounted.
