Father Diego Francisco Altamirano
Abstract
Detailed biography of the Spanish Jesuit Diego Francisco Altamirano (1625-1715). The article covers his work as Provincial in Paraguay and his efforts in Rome and Madrid to obtain tax exemptions for the missions. His work as official Visitor in the New Kingdom of Granada is highlighted, where he initiated the process of separation of the province of Quito and promoted the Maynas missions. At the same time, he commissioned Fr. Samuel Fritz to explore the Amazon River. Finally, his period as official Visitor and Rector in Peru is described. The authorship of the "Historia de la Provincia Peruana," previously considered anonymous, is attributed to him.
