Abstract

This extensive geographical and descriptive chronicle covers a territory from the coast of Ecuador to Chile and Río de la Plata. The author describes the fauna, flora, and customs of the peoples, including the practices of the yungas (inhabitants of coastal warm valleys) and serranos (inhabitants of the highlands) Indians. The mineral wealth of Potosí, Porco, and Huancavelica is detailed, as well as the foundation of cities and convents. Lizárraga narrates clashes with the Chiriguanos Indians, mentions the administration and/or leaderships of curacas (local chiefs) and corregidores, and offers critical observations on colonial administration and the morality of the population. Accounts of miracles, earthquakes, and daily life in cities like Lima, Cuzco, and Arequipa are included.
